The English translations of the Gen 5 Pokemon names, that is.

If you haven't seen it yet, the list of English translations of Pokemon names have surfaced on PokeBeach. If you want to have a spoiler-free game when the English version premiers, you'd probably not want to read the rest of this journal. But if you do, you can see the list here.

The complete list is just a rumour for now, but I really hope that some names never see the light of day. The trend to smash two words together to create new names was rampant especially in Gen 3, where names like Mawile and Regice were just strange and difficult to pronounce. However, Gen 5 takes that to a whole new level, complete with terrible puns. Among the top offenders for me are:

Unfezant - Is it unpleasant? Or an un-pheasant, which means it isn't a pheasant at all?

Roggenrolla - In all honesty, it isn't a downright terrible name, but it does sound rather delicious, like a gorgonzola casserole.

Cofagrigus - Not only is it difficult to pronounce, it sounds like a swear word, and contains one as well.

Beartic - Ambiguous pronounciation. Be-Artic or Bear-Tic? It's probably the latter, but it sounds like a muscle disorder faced by bears.

Eelektrik - Shifting the first E to the back would spell Elektrike. Also, it sounds like a name a 5-year-old came up with.

Krookodile - Something about this name is just plain lame...

Amoonguss - Confusing to pronounce AND spell. Also, I don't quite get the 'Among Us' bit.

So, what's your favourite and most hated name(s) of this generation?
  • Listening to: Dog Days are Over - Florence and the Machine

I really don't understand that Cofagrigus has swear word on it, and when I take a look of the "Fag" in closer detail, it stands for homosexual or effeminate man.

I just wanted to point that out, but if kids would like to say that, then they can say it, it's not my problem that ESRB in North America didn't take into the account that Cofagrigus has hidden swear word on it. But, why ESRB has to ruin whole North American audience!? And if the "Language" -content description is added, then it would bump up the age rating to Teen, but this is just a guess, though.

not only are the names terrible such as Alomomola-(why not just alomola?)
but the designs for pretty much all of them are terribly awful IMO
the worst is the pan- simi- line. they look soo fakemon (did the designers take the day off that day?)
the ice cream ones - srsly?
the gears - how lazy do you wanna get?

the only names and design i actually like are
the eel family (but why is it not water/electric??)
Frillish and Jelliscent - nice names and its a water/ghost, oooo interesting
the candle line also have really cool names and designs
also solosis line - best 'original new' pokemon design but shame about name reuniculus (what about Triculus - continuing on the solo, duo theme)
but the best of the lot is the turtle guys (Carracosta is a better name than its pre evo Tirtouga) and they actually look like they belong in the Pokemon world

PS is it me or does seem to be loads of bug types in this gen?

Well, here's my rant list. Feel free to tl;dr it:::

-Snivy; it sucked the moment it was announced. Smugleaf was much better.
-Dewott; why so simple?
-Purrloin; did they want it to sound like a steak or something? XD
-Roggenrola; sounds tasty. They probably let a hamster walk across a keyboard to make this.
-Woobat; woobie woobie woobie woobie
-Timburr; *facedesk*
-Sawk; is it Bert from Sesame Street? Cause now it seems it's a sock.
-Dwebble; my friend is now very sad. The name just doesn't sound right.
-Cofagrigus; how does one pronounce this?!
-Tirtouga; sounds too much like Tortuga. Bring me the rum, Gibbs! XD
-Emolga; wasn't Emonga good enough, Nintendo?!
-Amoongus; howtopronounce?!.jpg
-Axew; way too short for my liking.
-Beartic; another of the unpronouncables.
-Druddigon; Crimgan sounded better.
-Mienshao; Oh dear god, what have they done? DX
-Mandibuzz; sounds like what they should have called Pinsir.
-Cobalion; It sounded and looked better without the "i".

... End rant.

And......Beartic....(=_=)'s previous form...?

I'd say I like this generation's pokemon and names than last. Yes there are the 'stinker' names: Scraggy and Alomomola; but it's still better than Glameow, Stunky, Huntail, or Muk.

Some of them do require a second try at saying them, and some are really weird when you look at them, but then again, their pokemon names, there isn't really a 'gold standard' for names as there is for designs.
Besides, it isn't like the names are 'drastically different', Tabunne to Audino or Oobemu to Beeheeyem (which threw me for loop the first few times.)

I hate Serperior and Cofagrigus. Absolutely hate them both. I mean, Serperior makes sense but it's just too "easy", ya know? I don't like Cofagrigus because of the *obvious naughty word is obvious* thing, but because of what you said: It took me several tries to pronounce the damn thing correctly and it's the English name!

Pawnaird (Komatana) and Bisharp (Kirikizan) are pretty clever though. Vullaby (Baruchai) is also pretty clever too.

Oh yeah: Klink, Klang, and Klinklang. Just freaking LOL.

Put straight, I think two people worked on the names for Gen 5. Someone who was really awesome at making names, and someone who was really, really awful at making names.

Because in my opinion some of the new names are actually excellent! And as you've pointed out, a very large (too large >_>) portion are really horrible!

Argh!

Also I already spammed my watchers with hate for the English name for Professor Makomo. KSJFNSVKJNVJKGHLS The GERMAN names for the rivals were near spotless unchanged.

Hopefully I can forgive all this with N's story.

Serperior - You mean Rhyperior, right?
Stoutland - ...
Vanillish - Really. REALLY?
Trubbish - The "T" should be taken out.
Scrafty - A fail attempt at being crafty with names involves adding a single letter.
Karrablast - No. Just no.
Eelektross - Electrike and Metagross evolved!

Reuinclus.... I like Rankurusu MUCH better than that name. |D It hurts to say. I think Foongus and Amoongus is hillarious. XD "There's a foongus amoongus." It's a play on the saying. Also, Emolga sounds.... sorta gross for some reason. Emonga rolls off the tongue better to me.

A lot of these names feel Russian to me... am I the only one getting that? Also, my mouth hurts a bit from saying some of these. |D

I agree that they should have at least kept Ranculus as its name. Reuinclus is a nightmare to pronounce. Now that I've googled the name (and as proven by all others who commented), fungus among us seems to be a pretty common saying. So it makes a little more sense, but I still can't forgive Amoonguss's horrible spelling.

And Emolga sounds like a disease. (Ebola?) Eeewww...

Or at least Renucleus... that almost looks like an actual name. Amungus would've been fine... Amoongus looks like how people say "dood" instead of "dude".... I do that a lot, but still. >:I Not for a name.

I know, right? If I heard there was a Pokemon based off a momonga and I heard the name before I saw the picture, I'd be like, "Eww... Emolga??... Is it like a poison type? Sounds like a plague."

Honestly, I dunno why anyone would name a Pokemon with the three ugliest letters in the english language at once: U, F, and Z. Unphezant would be better-- Unpheasant wouldn't be judged! =P But, I do like some of them; particularly, Tepig's line, the Pan- and Simi- lines, and Rufflet and Braviary.

... though, that list, while it does contain a few of the real ones, it doesn't seem very... professional. It seems like a fan drew up a list of all the names before any were released, somehow got the scoop to a few of the real names before they were publicly known, pasted them on top of his made-up names, and submitted the list.

ALSO, VERY LARGE QUESTION... Roggenrolla has 11 letters in it-- beyond the traditional limit of ten (see Feraligatr... couldn't have that "e" or it would pass the in-game limit of the GBC games). While, certainly a longer name is possible in newer generations, it seems HIGHLY unlikely that a game that tries so hard to be nostalgic would do something like that. I see 3 other names with the maximum-- seems almost forced. No way NoA would mess up the Pokemon names so bad unless they just gave up.

You have a very good point with the 10-letter limit :) Let's just that a number of names (the more awful ones) were just a cruel prank a fan is playing on us.

I agree with you on the Pan- and Simi- lines, as well as Rufflet and Braviary. But Pignite? I'm sure there's a verrry bad pun lurking somewhere.

Also,

I thought we had pheasant for dinner last night. Then mom informed me it was actually turkey. I had a very unpheasant taste in my mouth that night.

Actually, nevermind about the whole "11 letters" thing... Roggenrola is spelled with one "l"...

So, maybe the list is real after all? But, really the only ones I don't like are in your list, and not too many more are that ugly. Cofagrigus, Unfezant, and Beheeyem (... what?) are my least favorites of the whole list, but others are nice (I really like Litwick's line, too).

But, I'm still gonna be disappointed-- not the best names, but I guess they could be worse...

Goodness, I hope so. But, the confirmed names of Cofagrigus and Reuniclus give me doubts (though, Reuniclus is understandable).

Heh, I'm just saying Unpheasant would look better aesthetically, and pull off the same pronunciation. ;) I just don't understand why it has to be "unpleasant"... from Pidove, to Tranquill, both nice and inviting names, to Unfezant? It seems like someone unofficial thought of a good (in their mind) combination of words, and just had to stick it in somewhere. =P

...
...
...

Oh crapsichord... some new English names came out today, and they seem to agree with the list... namely Excadrill, Sewaddle, and Alomomola. Augh, I'm going to be really disappointed if this is the real list. If only I could read Japanese! ^^;
