Pop-up Wind Waker by endless-whispers Pop-up Wind Waker by endless-whispers
A birthday card made for a friend who’s a fan of the Zelda games. Although I never got around to playing any of the Zelda games, I am familiar with the Wind Waker and decided to give a shot converting it to pop-up form.

Design Notes:
I used a pop-up book (20K Leagues Under The Sea) for reference, although there are a few variations of making pop-up ships that can be found online. This is actually the 2nd card I made – making the first card was a tricky process as the design and measurements started out from scratch. As I was finishing up the first card (which looked a little messy but otherwise OK), a mistake in gluing led to a huge crease in the card. Luckily, I still had enough materials to make a duplicate. The second card turned out much neater since I knew pretty much what to do and what to avoid.

This card combines several simple pop-up mechanisms, and was very satisfying to make. Arguably the trickiest (and most fun) part of making the card was getting the figurehead to look the same on both sides.

If you’re wondering where’s Link, I was tempted to add him in, but I was running out of time. I’ll attempt adding him in if I ever make this card again. The picture at the bottom-right is the card’s cover. I know it should have a message, but it looked pretty classy the way it was, so I left it alone.

I studied mechanisms from pop-up books (especially those by Robert Sabuda) and incorporated them into this card. Also, this site is great for teaching beginners how to make pop-ups: [link].

i feel like this needs to be an item in the game or maybe you get a pictograph of this.
it needs to be incorporated--that's how awesome your work is.
